Over the past few months we've seen several rumors surrounding Microsoft's upcoming smartwatch. However, according to the latest stack of information from Paul Thurrott, Microsoft's smartwatch may in fact be more of a fitness band similar to Samsung's Gear Fit.

Thurrott reveals the wearable is a wristband capable of displaying smartphone notifications, with a focus on health and fitness. It will have a range of sensors built-in for tracking steps, heart rate and calories burned, and will potentially integrate with smartphone apps such as Bing Health & Fitness, and HealthVault.

Like previous rumors indicated, Microsoft's smartband will work on Android, iOS and Windows Phone devices, which is uncommon in the current market. Android Wear smartwatches, launched at Google I/O in June, are only compatible with Android (for example), while Samsung's Gear line is even more locked down and only works on Samsung handsets.

Microsoft's smart fitness band will be priced similarly to Samsung's Gear products, which indicates a price in the $200-300 range. It will also reportedly launch in the fourth quarter of 2014, which aligns with other rumors pointing to an October reveal.
