    Hi folks-
I am trying to retrieve some old files off of an old computer. I would like to connect directly to this computer via ethernet cable, becasue I don't have a floppy drive on my current, nor do I have a burner in the old one.

So, someone once showed me how to connect 2 computers with an ethernet cable by changing the IP addresses,Gateway, & DNS of both computers. Essentially you "Trick" the computer into thinking it's on a network. I forgot how to do this. Can someone please help me out here? These files are critical.

    Thanks

    You need a crossover network-cable.
Make sure both PCs are in the same Workgroup.
    Set 1 PC to e.g. IP 192.168.1.1 with subnet-mask 255.255.255.0
Set the Default Gateway also to 192.168.1.1
Set the other PC to e.g. IP 192.168.1.2 with subnet-mask 255.255.255.0
Set the Default Gateway also to 192.168.1.1, same as the other PC.
Make sure file-sharing has been activated on both PCs.
