Hi,
I keep getting an error message for comres.dll - it cannot be located. How do I fix this problem please?
thanks

Well, there are so many people on the internet complaining about this .dll going missing that it looks very suspicious to me ! That DLL is an integral part of internet communications and therefore a prime target for spyware, malware etc.

This link http://www.driverskit.com/dll/comres.dll/393.html offers a download of it, but there is no guarantee it is the correct version, or maybe even a virus. Whatever, never, ever follow links that offer to 'check your PC for corrup or missing file'. Far too many are intent on downloading viruses, keyloggers or just extorting money from you. BEWARE.

The first thing you should do is to go start / run and type sfc /scannow in the popup box, which may retreive it.
see here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747

If you do trust a download site (preferably Microsoft itself) then the .dll goes in C:\windows\system32

you may have to manually register the .dll file. if you dont know how that is done it is Start/run in the pop up box type

regsvr32 "C:\Windows\system\comres.dll"

Whether this is a simple error or not do a very through virus check NOW

When you right-click on a .dll, you can choose properties, and on the version tab these are the correct details...

For XP SP2 version 2001.12.4414.258 792,064 bytes, dated 04Aug04 time 00:56
For XP SP3 version 2001.12.4414.700 792,064 butes, dates 14Aug08 time 01:11

One good way to install this thing properly, therefore, is to install SP3
