Missing Files

Yesterday an important folder, together with several sub-folders, somehow disappeared from my desktop. I managed to retrieve these folders using System Restore but the files they had contained - mostly Word & Excel files - were still missing. Is there any way of bringing these files back ?

Try some UNdelete utility like from here http://www.officerecovery.com/freeundelete/
Provided you (or rather Windows) have not overwritten the original files with anything new, you may stand a small chance.
How come you did not save those files in My Documents/subfolder?
