Missing important Xp home files it seems

Ok here is the deal. I got the USB convertor for use with a Ps1\Ps2 contoller on my Pc. well after getting the drivers and a friend helping me trying to get it to read. we noticed that I am missing Windows Xp Home edition files. like hidden.sys to start. therefore its not reading some things. for example under control panel->System->DEvice mananger I am missing Human Interface Devices. from what a friend said. I don't have $70+ to get a new Xp home cd so I am looking for any options availble to me from you all. I really want to get missing files back.

What make of pc is it, if its a home build then you should have a xp home cd!!!! If not, then your xp home is probably illegal!!!!

its home built and like i said my brother and I use windows xp home edition, he lost the cd is what i'm trying to say, but i am missing files now, so basically i need ot know what to do cause i'd hate to spend $70+ for a new cd if my brother ends up finding it.
