missing operating system

i was downloading norton 2006 from the internet on a comp. with 2005 still on it . the download failed then stoped i hit con.alt.del. and lost the O.S.
IT WAS XP HOME i had to order the recovery disk from sony. will all files and folders be lost ?

without a recovery disk can you use norton 2005 disk/registry repair cd?

no i didnt back up i dont know if i can use norton to repair, i'll try that
