Mobility Radeon messing with DVD playback

Greetings,
I have a Toshiba Satellite 1115-s107 with a Mobility Radeon 16MB video card. About a year ago I started getting odd green and purple streaks in DVD playback through the system. It does this in Windows Media Player, WinDVD, or any other player. I have plugged an external DVD to the system to check for errors in my drive. I have, as much as possible, updated my drivers from ATI (which is dated at 2002). I have directx 9 installed. I am running Windows XP Home Edition.
Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening and what to do about it?

Even in PowerDVD? if yes, you should trash your old laptop and buy a used one.

As a matter of fact...

I downloaded the PowerDVD trial version and tried it out and everything plays perfectly. Any ideas why this is the case?
