8x is backwards compatible to 4x. 4x is backwards compatible to 2x, and so on. It may be your videocard, but it wouldnt be related to AGP speeds.

I had the same issue. Had an ASUS A7S-333 and tried two different brands of GeForce MX 440 (MSI and PNY) and could not get a post. I put in my GeForce TI 4200 and it works fine... Didn't really sit down to figure out why... Upgraded to an ATI 9100 and it works fine as well... Video chip and MoBo incompatible??? Not a question that needs answering for me, but someone else might need it.
