More adware/spyware problems

Running Windows ME. IE keeps popping up and loading adware websites like ad-w-a-r-e.com and more.

Second problem, is that whenever I try to run Norton AV 2002, I get an "Internet Explorer Script Error" which reads "An error has occured in this dialog. Error 29 unspecified error". It won't let me do a full system scan at all.

The only thing I can come up with, is to check that Symantec/Norton's program "sbserv.exe" is not blocked from running by any security settings on your PC.

You don't have any "nasties" as far as I can see, other than these "redirects":

Okay, I've gone ahead and let HJT fix those items. I went into MSCONFIG to check on sbserv and it hasn't been turned off there. I wonder if there is any other place I should look?

I have also run CWShredder. Every time I run it, it says it has removed CWS.Bootconf and has restored the host file redirections - but it never seems to NOT remove it, indicating to me that it apparently isn't removing it successfully. What your thoughts on that?

One last note I forgot to mention, is that this "Script" error occurs most every place I go to in Windows - especially Control Panel and in Windows Explorer.

Rightclick Internet Explorer on the desktop, select Properties, then click on the tab "Advanced".
There are 2 script-related fields. Set a tick
in "Disable script debugging" and make sure there is NO tick in "Display a notification...". You probably have this ticked, hence the error messages.

That's what I had initially thought too, so I checked it several times. I've got both of them set disable debugging and disable notices all set correctly.

Can you go to this file: c:\hp\djregfix.reg, right-click it, select Edit or Open with [Notepad], then copy and paste it into here? Like to see what it is.
It looks like it could be from Hewlett & Packard (HP) something to do with a DeskJet (DJ) but it could also be something masquerading itself.
Your HP directory seems to be: C:\PROGRAM FILES\HP\
so it makes me suspicious.

Also, in your Norton there is the switch to activate "ScriptBlocking". Click it to "Off" or whatever for the time being, to see if that improves. Norton/Symantec may have an update for that function. Worth checking out.

I fixed it - turns out that the update for Internet Explorer was bad. It corrupted a bunch of files. So I uninstalled the update, reinstalled the operating system (HP Recovery Disk) and that cured the problem.

The system reinstall along with downloading and running Spybot Search and Destroy, cured my problem with the popup ads. Even after running AdAware, and Hijackthis, Spybot still found and removed 2 dozen more registry entries.

Thanks for all the help on that! Now I gotta solve that Norton mystery.
