Via Technologies will be entering the 64-bit x86 market with a chip of its own to challenge Intel and AMD, it has been revealed. The Taiwanese chipmaker detailed the chip during the Fall Processor Forum, but as yet has kept quiet on release dates.

Transmeta, whose chips run x86 software through a translation technology, also is working on 64-bit support, and is targeting their chip at laptops.
