More than a dozen 2016 Chevy models will support Apple CarPlay, Android Auto

More than a dozen of Chevrolet’s upcoming 2016 model cars and trucks will support Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto in-vehicle infotainment systems. The first Chevy car, the 2016 Cruze, will roll into dealerships starting June 24.

General Motors said the following 2016 model vehicles equipped with its 7-inch MyLink infotainment package will be compatible with both Android Auto and CarPlay: Camaro, Camaro Convertible, Cruze, Malibu, Silverado, Silverado HD and Spark.

Those opting for the larger 8-inch display will be limited to CarPlay for now in the following models: Camaro, Camaro Convertible, Colorado, Corvette, Corvette Convertible, Cruze, Impala, Malibu, Silverado, Silverado HD, Spark, Suburban, Tahoe and Volt. Android Auto support for these models is expected later this year.

Alicia Boler-Davis, senior vice president for global connected car consumer experience at General Motors, said it’s all about choice. No two customers are alike, she continued, and they cannot expect a single solution that works for every driver in every situation.

It’s worth pointing out that the platform is offered on all trim levels but you need the MyLink infotainment package for it to work and select vehicles can only be equipped with the larger display.

Both Android Auto and CarPlay help bring useful features like turn-by-turn navigation, voice-to-text messages, streaming music and phone calls from a user’s phone directly to the in-dash display. The interface is similar to what you get on the respective platform although fonts are larger to make them easier to view and press on a bigger screen.

So if Chevy didn't kill off enough of their buyers with faulty ignition systems, lets add some tech gadgetry that will be sure to kill off a few not smart enough to know when not to use it. Hah...

I've said it before...the decisions that come from the top execs is just mind blowing. I guess Chevy is trying to shave off a good chuck of future buyers.

So cars evolved to putting most controls around the steering wheel for convenience/safety. But now we're putting a touch screen in the middle of the car for you to look down at while driving. Maybe I'll write an app that will show a view of what's in front of the car while you're checking your friends FB videos on the motorway.

A few buttons is one thing. Any good driver will learn where they are and use them without looking. But a brightly-lit screen with moving images flickering just outside your peripheral vision is way too much temptation.
