More than half of all Steam games rarely (if ever) get played

About 24 games in my steam library and with only left 4 dead played since last week, about 20 games not played since steam's 2013 holiday sales.

Steam sales : Hoarding for gamers
"omg this is so cheap, I need to get it....I may want to play it....one day.....someday....as soon as im done with all these other things in my life, yeah then I will have time to catch up with my list of steam games..."

It's a hobby for a lot of people like myself. Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld have garages full of collectible cars worth millions of dollars that they will probably only drive a handful of times in their lifetime. I have a handful of Steam games the most expensive one being $9.99 I ever paid for until, as time I went on, I realized that $9.99 was expensive. Most were bought for less than $5.00. So, the point of the post is that it's not the worst addiction in the world to have by any stretch of the imagination. Yes, if you intend to play all the games you purchase 100% through to the end you may be wasting money. If you simply collect for the fun of it and have the knowledge that you can pick from a smorgasboard(sp?) of games on a whim's notice, that is what people are actually paying for. Purchasing a game on a whim costs more money than selecting a game to play that you already own on a whim. So forward thinking is involved. So its 1)to play the game, 2)to collect the game, 3)to have a variety of choices when you are ready to play. Choice alone has value. The very reason I have NOT purchased(or even installed a demo of) Windows 8. Thank You Julie Larson!!!!!

Steam isn't in business to have people play their games. They are there to sell games and they do a good job. I have maybe 10 steam games, all bought on super sale and have played them all. I have yet to finish Max Payne 3 and Shadow Warrior. I will finish them though. I play slow and infrequently. Games are not an addiction but a distraction.

"You’re probably thinking that most of the non-played games were free-to-play titles..."

Well, actually, no. If I ever want a free-to-play title, I'll download it when I want it. But if I get the chance to buy a game for a couple of dollars/euro's which would normally cost 10, 20 or more, I just might do it - even if I have no interest in playing it right away. To download a free-to-play title and then NOT playing it, would be stupid. (Maybe the bargain hunting as well, but it makes at least a little sense.)

Steam sales are like Pokemon. Gotta catch em all. I'm started doing the same with microsofts xbox 360 on demand sales. It's addictive

How many unplayed DVD's or un-watched films have I got on my PVR? It doesn't mean that I'll never watch them, just hat I've yet to get around to them.
As for the <1 hr issue, that rather looks like modern take on a demo/price of magazine with demo on it - how much did you once pay for a mag to play a demo, and how much of the mags price would you apportion to that demo? probably more than the price of a game on Steam

I have a large steam catalogue and I would estimate that 20% of them I have never even loaded. It's when you buy bundles in the steam sales. Like I got about 10 tomb raider games and probably only loaded one of these.

There's a reason for why some games never/rarely get played. I used earlier to download all my games but nowdays when I get some money I actually just buy the games that I liked back then just to support the developers. And then some games are also there just for a rainy day, you never know when you want to play something completely different, like an indie game or something. :p

The stats seem accurate, especially for me. But a majority of the games I have not played (or even downloaded) were from game packs that I bought cause it had a few games I wanted and was still cheaper to buy the pack rather then the games individually.

2 sales that offer "PACKS" sales, Christmas and summer....

About half my games are unused or tried once. I would love to try them before I buy but that's not an option unfortunately.

When they are cheap enough and the price vs. risk of non-fun ratio is acceptable I take a chance...

I have about 8 or 9 games in my library...I've played all but one. That is only because I want to finish the first game before I start the second. It's the Amnesia series. I have one and two since they were on sale. thought why not! Of course I've been scared out of trying to further my progress since I'm being approached by a monster....(Can't defend myself. >.<)

I completely agree with this article. I have tons of games that I have bought and remain unplayed due to lack of time. Just to name a few the whole Assassin Creed franchaise, Bioshock infinite, Sleeping Dogs, War Game, Dishonored, Rise of Fligth Simulator, several cities simulators, saints row franchise, metro last light, darksiders 2 and several others that I can't remember. I didn't had much free time in the last years and when I have time for gaming I play MechWarriorOnline, still can't avoid buying them when they go in discounts dreaming that someday I will have time for them... :(

I buy old games to have them if I get bored. This article implies that steam is rip off and I am stupid for buying the game. I am offended. I would would rather pay 10 bucks and find out the game sucks than 60 bucks. I am hiding my profile today. What I with my money business. Not happy this study was done.

I have bought about fifty games via steam and I have in my account 124 in total most of these games are from HumbleBundle. I have played 88 games of those 124. About ten I have play to end credits
