  1. When Motorola announced their three latest smartphones at an event last month, all seemed like compelling options at their respective price points. The new Moto G is a solid improvement on last year's budget handset, the Moto X Style looks like a great flagship competitor, and the mid-range Moto X Play features a huge battery and impressive camera.

Unfortunately only the Moto X Style and the third-generation Moto G were confirmed to be hitting the United States, despite Motorola launching the Moto X Play pretty much everywhere else. Now we might know why, with a recent set of rumors indicating the Moto X Play would be hitting Verizon exclusively as the 'Droid Maxx 2'.

The Droid Maxx 2 looks very similar to the Moto X Play, as seen in leaked images below provided by Droid Life, except for a typically-large Verizon logo on the rear panel. Hardware is expected to be identical as well, which means the Droid Maxx 2 will feature a 5.5-inch 1080p display, 21-megapixel rear camera, a Snapdragon 615 SoC with 2 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of storage.

Phandroid, who also got word of the Droid Maxx 2's imminent launch, reports that the device will retail for $300 off-contract, which is a pretty attractive price point for this mid-range handset. As with the last Droid Maxx from 2013, the successor's main selling point will be the huge 3,650mAh battery.

Rumors also suggest that Verizon will soon be getting the 'Droid Turbo 2', a successor to last year's big-battery Droid Turbo. The Droid Turbo 2 will be based on the Moto X Style, although it's not known whether the two handsets will share the same specifications. However it is expected to be more expensive than the Droid Maxx 2, at $600 off-contract.

Considering the Moto X Play is just about to launch in a number of territories, with the Moto X Style expected shortly thereafter, Verizon's two variants of these devices shouldn't be too far away.

Maxx 2? Maybe next years model they'll call a MaXXX 3... if they think it's sexy enough.
