Multiple explorer.exe processes in Windows 7

I recently bought a Dell Studio Laptop with Windows 7 Home Premiun.

I noticed that a lot of times there are multiple explorer.exe processes running. First I saw about 5. I thought maybe its normal in Windows 7. Because there are always about a total of 70 processes running.

But today I say 11 (yes 11) explorer processes.

Is this normal in Windows 7? Because this surely doesn't happen in XP.

Sometimes when I shut down the computer a message is displayed saying: "Waiting for process to play shut down sound: explorer.exe"

    Could this be a virus?

Its been less than 2 months since I bought the laptop.

Does no one know anything about this at all? Or is this thread invisible?
