Well here is my HJT log so that someone might be able to find something to fix. My internet it fine, but everything else is slow. Applications such as Firefox take 3-4 minutes to open, scans with things like ad-aware take 4 hrs, and my printer takes hours too. My comp is pretty old, but it always worked decent (at least compared to what I already said) and it seems odd that it would just start turning bad randomly, which is why I believe there is a problem to fix.

Brief summary of comp: bought in beggining of 2003-so a little over 3 years old
256 mb RAM
80 gig HD
AMD Athlon xp 2000+ 1.67gh
32mb video card

(I hope I uploaded it right)

Ive done everything up to the scanning in safe mode part, and i have some questions. I havnt tried yet, but ive booted into safe mode before, and all it was was black, and even with the commmand promt i couldnt get anything open. Is the part where i configure windows to show all files going to allow me to open things up during safe mode or should i be doing something else?

Thanks for the extremely quick reply, and sorry if this may be annoying but... If i follow your order, booting into safe mode 1st, my point was how would i do stuff like turn off system restore WHILE in safe mode. Or basically do anything, my whole screen is black except for the corners saying safe mode and top saying my type of comp

From safe mode either right click on the my computer icon on your desktop and select properties, or click start and right click on my computer. Select properties and then the system restore tab. Tick the box that says turn off system restore. Click apply/ok.

Alternatively, you can go to your control panel and click on the system icon. This will take you to the properties of my computer.

The instructions are in the links I just gave you.

Regards Howard :)

can you still do the ctrl+alt+del for task manager? if you can, open it, go to the process tab and see if you can find explorer.exe

if you cant, go back to the applications tab and create a new task. type in explorer.exe and see if that works

otherwise in that box (new tasks) you can try typing in the folder you want to access like for example Control Panel or C:/windows/Documents and Settings/user etc... and execute files as well eg: C:/program files/grisoft/avg free/avgcc.exe

First off, thank you very much N3051M....your advice to type explorer.exe into the config box immediatly brought up all my files onto the desktop. After doing everything required, i know have my "fresh" HJT log, ready to be examined.
