Mysterious New User Account (XP)

By cfitzarl

  1. I came down with a few viruses after a popup that was like a clone of an XP Security alert came up on a website. I fell for the trick (I feel like an *****), and was plagued by >6 viruses. I removed all but one, which was quarantined. I just checked the user account page, and an account with a weird name was there beside mine, with limited access. Do I still have viruses? I deleted it, and the files in it immediately. What's going on?

You may indeed be infected with a virus/spyware etc.

Go HERE and follow the instructions exactly.

Post a fresh HJT log into this thread, only after doing the above.

    Regards Howard :)

    It's okay, I'll just format.

If you`re not bothered about formatting, then by all means go ahead. It`s certainly one way of getting rid of any nasties.

    Good luck.

    Regards Howard :)
