Solved Nasty,Nasty iexplore.exe infection

I will have to look high and low for the install CD. This machine is about 4 yrs old and I have had that long to misplace every bit of documentation and the CD/DVD

It strikes me that the infection lives. It must be what turns the proxy on. That is the only way they can route what they want where they want. It means I haven't killed it yet. I will set up the USB and find the magic boot sequence key and see if I can do the repair/install.

Let's reset your router...

Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista, 7 and 8), type in:
cmd
Click OK (Vista, 7 and 8 users: while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

Turn the computer off.

On your router, you'll find a pinhole marked "Reset".
Keep pushing the hole, using a pencil, or a paperclip until all lights briefly come off and on.
NOTE. Simple router disconnecting from a power source will NOT do.
Restart computer and check for redirections.

NOTE. You may need to re-check your router security settings, as described HERE

Then disable proxies again. See if it'll hold.

No luck with the router reset. A restart and IE defaults to proxy on. I have to find some more time to complete the Windows repair. Hopefully tomorrow. I assume that loading a third party firewall won't fix this mess?

Thank you for your patience!

Repair complete - Wow! All the way back to IE 8. I am in the update and reboot cycle for today. The only thing is the darn proxy server which is checked on reboot/restart each time. Should I try the router reset again?

All else is good - firewall is functioning and AV up and running.

Okay - reset the router and - no luck. It still has the proxy checked on restart. The good news is I was able to upgrade IE. I haven't seen any extra iexplore.exe processes. I don't know if it's resolved or not. All in all - it seems better. Anything else I should do?

Let's test something...

Turn the computer off.
Connect your computer straight to the modem (bypassing router).
Disconnect modem from the power source.
Wait 20 seconds. Reconnect it.
Turn the computer on.
Turn proxies off.
Restart computer.
See about proxies.

Don't laugh too loud - I have Time Warner cable connected to a Motorola Surfboard. I suspect the modem and the router are the same? I have been resetting the Motorola unit each time. There is, of course, an ethernet cable PC to Motorola and the cable from Motorola to wall. I don't see any other ways to connect. The exe seems to have abated. I get a slow or no start once in a while that leaves an iexpore.exe in process memory, but that is of my own doing. So far, it looks good.

I'm thinking it may be your ISP.
Call Time Warner and ask them if they set any proxies in your browsers.

Will do. All the other bad behavior is gone. I am visiting your "Donate" link. Many thanks for all the excellent assistance.
