Need help ASAP!!

I just restarted my computer. and when it went to reboot I got this message

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"

How can I get windows to reboot properly, im running Windows XP Pro SP2. Can some one tell me how to restore it without losing my files
