OK. Let's try to get your connection back now....

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
    Power them back on.
    Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

    If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
    cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /registerdns
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

    Restart computer.

    If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
    cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

    At Command Prompt, type in:
    netsh int ip reset reset.log
    Hit Enter.
    Type in:
    netsh winsock reset catalog
    Hit Enter.

    Restart computer.

    If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml (doesn't work in Vista)
    Restart computer, and check again.

    If that doesn't work...
Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF) (doesn't work in Vista):
    http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
    Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

    Reinstall BITS
    Reinstall Windows Firewall
    Repair Permissions
    Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

    Restart computer.

I tried all steps except DAF, but unfortunately I don't have an XP cd. Can I still run it?
  3. Broni Malware Annihilator Posts: 39,349   +175

    Yes, go ahead...
  4. geoffd86 Newcomer, in training Posts: 50

I ran DAF and this is exactly what it said for a few files. I might have missed the second one because I thought it was repeating the first one, but here goes:

Error 127 C:\WINDOWS\system32\iesetup.dll in not registerable or the file is corrupted. Your version of iesetup.dll is: 8.00.6001.18702. Please contact dial-a-fix@DjLizard.net so that an exception can be made for your version of this file.

    Same message for inseng.dll or ensing.dll (i think) ???
    mshtml.dll
    msrating.dll
    occache.dll
    pngfilt.dll
    webcheck.dll

All had the same message, file path and number

Also when I started the program couldn't figure out which version of ie i was running so i sent them an e-mail like it said

I also didn't do the hammerhead step because it required the internet or the XP cd

    1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).

    2. Type in (or copy and paste):

    cmd /c ping google.com>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

    and press Enter.

    3. Notepad will open.

    4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.

I can't copy and paste because I'm posting on a separate comp.

    This is what it said:
Ping request could not find host google.com. Please check the name and try again.

    I'm gonna try it again

Quick question, should I be wired in at this point or is wireless okay?
If you need me wired in I'll just plug into the wireless router if that's alright.

  7. Broni Malware Annihilator Posts: 39,349   +175

Yeah, try wired connection and if it still doesn't work, try to bypass router and wire the computer straight to the modem.

I tried both ways and got the same could not find host google.com error.

I double checked it and made sure I used the correct type of slashes
  9. Broni Malware Annihilator Posts: 39,349   +175

    Try little bit different command:
    cmd /c ping 74.125.19.99>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$
  10. geoffd86 Newcomer, in training Posts: 50

Pinging 74.125.19.99 with 32 bytes of data:

    Destination host unreachable.
    Destination host unreachable.
    Destination host unreachable.
    Destination host unreachable.

    Ping statistics for 74.125.19.99:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

I typed this in because I'm on a different comp

    Hmmm....
Do you have any errors in Device Manager, especially regarding ethernet controller?
  12. geoffd86 Newcomer, in training Posts: 50

How exactly do i access the device manager
  13. Broni Malware Annihilator Posts: 39,349   +175

    Click OK.
  14. geoffd86 Newcomer, in training Posts: 50

i went to broadcom netlink Gigabit ethernet and 1394 network adapter. It said both were were properly
  15. Broni Malware Annihilator Posts: 39,349   +175

    Try to uninstall/reinstall both anyway.
  16. geoffd86 Newcomer, in training Posts: 50

How exactly do I do that? I don't think I have any discs that go with the comp
  17. Broni Malware Annihilator Posts: 39,349   +175

You have to go to your computer manufacturer site and download drivers from there.
Use USB stick to move files between two computers.
Let me know, if you have any problems finding correct drivers.
  18. geoffd86 Newcomer, in training Posts: 50

So I looked for the drivers on the manufacturers website (Ibuypower) and I need to know the model of my computer, which I'm not sure of. (I checked the bottom and found the serial number, XP key, and the model number, which happens to not exactly be on the website anymore)

The model number is 600 - on the website I found G600, which happens to have the same broadcom driver

So now I just need the 1394 adapter driver

    I have the numbers

    1394 Net Adapter: Microsoft 5.1.2535.0 7/1/2001

    I suggested computer manufacturer site.
What's your laptop brand and model?
  20. geoffd86 Newcomer, in training Posts: 50

I tried uninstalling the broadcom ethernet driver and then reinstall, but it said:

1644: You do not have sufficient priviliges to complete this installation. Log on as administrator and then retry this installation

I'm already logged on as administrator

    Safe mode?
