Need help with laptop/ printer connections

I have a new HP notebook, windows 10-64 bit. trying to print on a 6 year old? HP Laser jet 3330. I tried to download drivers but there are like 3 choices and that only gave me this PRINTED message; HP Laserjet 3d PCL XL error system: KERNEL Error: Unsupported protocol.
I'm no computer wiz but it seems like this is way too hard! I'm wondering if there are drivers that will even work. My canon scanner is too old to work with this laptop. I'm wondering if I should go for a different operating system so I don't have to buy all new equipment to go with this laptop!
 
OK, so this is what worked, I deleted the printer and drivers, unplugged the printer from my laptop, did a hard re-boot, plugged the printer into a different USB hub on the laptop, it recognized the printer and it printed!!
No thanks to HP support! it was a continuous circle of phone calls giving me other numbers to call, telling me I needed to go to the web-site that didn't recognize my serial numbers etc. telling me to call......
