Do you have to get the same adapter and router to get wireless connection.

you need a wireless network adapter and a router, they don't have to be the same brand

it is frequently helpful to have the same vendor, but also not a requirement.

the biggest issue seems to be with the encryption compatibility -- should not be
this difficult but it is.

the WEP works well universally, but it can be broken (ie hacked) easily.

it's when you try WPA or WPA2 that there are issues.
