Neil Young eyes Kickstarter to fund high-fidelity iPod competitor

Maybe the important thing in this that isn't being discussed is how he was talking about the artists being able to record music the way they want and have it being reproduced on a device that can make it sound like the artist intended... I'm not sure if he's implying recording in a 'new' manner, or whether he's just talking about having higher quality audio files.

If its just a matter of higher quality audio files, then I imagine if this ever started taking market share away from Apple (and Apple cared), Apple would just enable flac support on their devices and it would seriously hinder Pono's sales.

OK, for those of you who aren't aware of Neil Young's background, it is mostly in drugs, and not so much in music.

I'm from his generation, and I still don't get it. Once every 5 or 10 years, he comes up with a good, (OK, possibly even great), tune. That's not to say it's worth listening to all the s*** he pumps out in the meantime .

So, you can take your "Pono", 'stick it'in a safe place, and store nothing but Neil's best music on it, I think it's safe to say it will be 95% empty, at the turn of the next millennium.

And BTW, M$' .WMA also provides loss less encoding. I thought you could get 100% loss less out of FLAC as well, but the files would be bigger than that which have been discussed. (Not sure, don't shoot me).

BTW, Loreena McKennitt provides a choice of MP3 or FLAC downloads at her website.

Who's "Loreena McKennitt, you ask?

I have a wife that makes more money than me and no kids. The "more inportant things" and "better things" in my life are easily funded. The cash left over I use to fund my hobby's, such as my computer, my darkroom, music room, etc.
Great. Enjoy it while it's there. Nothing is forever.

A darkroom, really? Well then, "hi, ho 'Silver', away"! (*)

And they always accuse me of going off topic.:D And here I thought this thread was about how little Neil Young impresses me. If I knew then, what I know now.:p

(*) Get it? "Silver", the lone Ranger's horse, and the departing of silver based photography.

The reviews on this device should be interesting too see considering how much funding was receieved.

For the people wondering what's inside, you can find more about the supported file formats and hardware like DAC's used on the ponomusic website.
