I just purchased a new hard drive for my computer, but it wont boot. Xp sp2 installs just fine. It halts on bootup.

Hitachi told me to low level format. It worked for a short amount of time, but it failed again.

My specs:

Athlon 64bit 3000+
2x 512 pqi 3200 ram
64mb Nvidia video card
lanparty UT 250gb mb

Run Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test on it, if it fails, RMA it. If it passes, they might give you trouble about it though since it could pass and still have a critical problem.
You might also want to test a different ribbon cable, different power cable, and maybe swap with a known good drive to make sure there isn't a problem with the controller.
Also make sure jumper settings are correct and securely in place.
