New Burner Only Works In Pio Mode

Installed a new burner, and it will only work in PIO mode. In DMA mode it freezes up my computer. It is the only thing hooked up to my secondary ide cable, and is set to master. Any suggestions on what is wrong? Went and bought another brand, and it does the same thing.

Check the IDE-settings in your PC's BIOS, they could prevent DMA.
Or is your PC that old that it does not recognize anything faster than PIO?

I get the option to change to dma, but it doesn't work. Replaced a burnt out burner with a memorex mrx 500n. I have the option to change it to dma, but dma locks up the computer and nothing is recognized as soon as a dvd in inserted.

could try uninstall drivers you will find this in hardware computer manage
have xp or OS install disc ready may need to install drivers for controllers
I have seen a optical disc error like this and thats How it was fixed

it is not uncommon for a newly installed burner to drop into PIO mode usually uninstalling the IDE channel the burner is on (In device manager under IDE ATA Atapi controllers) and rebooting will often times solve the problem. when you reboot windows will automatically reinstall the IDE channel and the burner.
