New computer, windows won't install

Recently built a brand new computer, specs:

    AMD 64 3500
    K8 Triton nForce 3 MOBO
    2GB RAM
    2 hard drives: Maxtor 40GB, WD 300GB

problem: windows installation freezes on the screen "Setup is starting Windows."

Have tried having only one HD at a time plugged in, and get the same problem with either one. Even left computer in that state over night just to make sure.

    Any recommendations?

when you try starting the WD hard drive alone did you remove the jumper from it? newer WD drives do not like being jumpered when they are the only HD installed.
