New Mankind Divided trailer asks public: How do you pronounce "Deus Ex?"

  1. When a blockbuster video game’s release date draws closer, the studio responsible often puts out trailers as a way of upping the anticipation. Ubisoft did this earlier in the week with the first in its “Remote Access” series of clips to promote Watch Dogs 2, and now Square Enix is doing the same for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided – but using a slightly different approach.

While the new trailer does show off around 30 seconds or so of gameplay, it mainly focuses on people’s inability to pronounce “Deus Ex.”

The presenter takes to the streets of London's South Bank to ask passers-by if they’re able to say the game’s name correctly. Answers range from “Do Sex” to “Dis Ex,” though the last guy manages to say it right: “Dey Uhs Ex.”

The second half of the video looks at the origins of the Deus Ex name. While many will probably know it’s a shortened version of Deus Ex Machina, a term derived from the ancient Greek language that means “God from the machine,” fewer people realize that it comes from Greek theater.

The term is still used today to refer to a plot device whereby some implausible event resolves a seemingly unsolvable problem. But why is it in the title of the game?

In a two-decade-old interview dug up by Digital Spy, original series creator Warren Spector explained the reasons behind the name.

[The name] fits Deus Ex for a couple of reasons. First of all, there are several forces in the game who aspire to God-like powers or actually end up having them. But it also refers to the fact that so many computer game plots are so hopelessly lame. We're all still trying to figure out how to tell stories in this relatively new medium we're no more sophisticated in the use of the tools of our medium than the Greeks and Romans were in theirs.

We always seem to resort to brute force, deus ex machina storytelling, and I liked the kind of self-referential, we're-doing-the-best-we-can-even-when-we-suck aspect of the title.

Early impressions of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided have been overwhelmingly positive, with most reviewers' only criticism being that they can't wait until August 28 to get their hands on the full game.

Yep, I've been saying it wrong. At least it doesn't originate from the english language, then I would be more embaressed.

I'm sorry but I just can't understand how people don't know how to pronounce "deus". it's a word that pops up so often in our modern culture that it's impossible to not have heard it multiple times.

But then again... we're talking about british people. They always mispronounce things.
Like how they say "pounds" instead of kilograms or "yards" instead of meters. No wonder they get confused and drive on the wrong side of the road. ^_^

They don't seem to know how to spell, punctuate or use proper grammar either so this isn't particularly surprising. Besides, pronunciation is often affected by regional dialects so what is right to you might be wrong to someone else and vice versa.
