Newbie needs advice

Ok, I am completely new to the whole case mod thing. So I will start with the absolute basic question. I have installed a digital thermostat to monitor temps. My question is, if you only have one sensor, where is the absolute best place to put it? Should it be near something, or touching? Be as descriptive as possible guys, and help a noob out.

A probe NOT in contact with a device will only measure ambient air temp. in the case (useless). I would place it at the junction of CPU and heat sink.

Measuring your CPU temp like that isn't going to be an accurate description of what is happening. Your CPU temps can be read with a program from within windows, or whatever OS you are using. Ambient air temp might be relavent if you can compare it to outside of your case temp. There really isn't a "best" place to put it really, unless you have multiple ones and can measure several points inside your case.
