Google had a pretty big week with the launch of Android 5.0 Lollipop and the unveiling of three new hardware devices: the massive Nexus 6 smartphone, the Nexus 9 tablet and a streaming media box known as the Nexus Player.
The first Android TV device went up for pre-order yesterday although its time on the Google Play Store was short lived. While the listing still remains, the Nexus Player is no longer available to order and is shown as being out of inventory.
The natural assumption is that the streaming box simply sold out and Google has a winner on its hands. It’s a plausible assumption when you consider Google was also offering a $20 Play credit to anyone (in the US and Canada) that ordered the $99 device but that’s not exactly what happened.
As first noted by Android Police, Google has since added a notice at the bottom of the product page stating the device has not been approved by the Federal Communications Commission and can’t be made available for sale until the approval of the FCC has been obtained.
It seems unusual that Google would knowingly put something up for pre-order that hadn’t yet passed FCC muster. Hopefully it’s just a simple technicality instead of a major issue with the device.
We’ll keep an eye on the status and report back when it gets the green light.
