Have you tried DX Diag? If not I would give that a try, and you can do that by:

To start the DirectX Diagnostic Tool:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type dxdiag, and then click OK.

    More information here.

    What is your video card?

If you are using onboard video - usualy Intel chipsets or SIS etc, then the 3d aspect of Directx 9 wont be installed, since it cant handle it.

Easy option is to get yourself a video card either AGP or PCI etc or if there is any patch available for the game..

If you do use a card, then update drivers and the whole routine...

    video

not entirely sure about video, but dxdiag says this:

    Name: Mobility M10
    Manufacturer: ATI Technologies
Chip Type: Mobility Radeon 9600 Series AGP (0x4E50)
    DAC Type: Internal DAC (350MHz)
    Approx. Total Memory: 128mb
    Current Display Mode: 1440 x 900 (32bit) (60Hz)
    Monitor: Default Monitor

does this card not support the game??
sorry for being rubbish just assumed everything would work, as directx 9.0c is installed, is this card not compatible?

    all help is much appreciated
    thanks

hmm.. ATI Mobility.. is this a laptop correct? Has this game or others similar been installed on the machine before?

try going back to dxdiag and running the "Test Direct3d" under displays tab. I think most games will check the 3d aspect of directx, since they need it to run and if it is missing then well it wont recognise Dx9 installed (kinda).

Also maybe go try updating your video card drivers. It may help..

    directx

direct 3d tests all passed, and yes it is a laptop, the game has never been installed, so not sure what is going on, as i said the installation won't proceed due to this directx issue, will check for new drivers
any further help would be great

    solution

I found on ea's site that you could tell the autorun to ignore directx by putting D:\AutoRun.exe -DXInstalled in Run, it installed an works! stupid EA
