Nintendo Switch hacked to run in virtual reality mode

The Switch is an odd duck among contemporary game consoles yet as Nintendo has demonstrated in the past with the Wii, being different isn’t necessarily a shortcoming. Given its unique form factor, it may also be a bit more forward-looking than most initially realize.

Virtual reality is billed by many as the future of gaming and if Nintendo decides to go that route, it could certainly do so with the Switch. While sheer processing power may be a concern, the portable nature of the system is ideal for docking into a VR headset as YouTube user Nintendrew recently demonstrated.

Using a Durovis Dive 7 VR tablet holder, Nintendrew was able to easily mount the Switch and create the hardware portion of the setup. The challenging part, as he notes in the clip above, is getting custom footage on the Switch itself.

Fortunately, members of the modding community have shared information on how to hijack the Switch’s web browser to fully unlock it. From there, it’s just a matter of loading up the correct footage to put it to the test (in this example, it’s 3D footage from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D).

Again, as you’ll see, hacking the Switch for VR is more a proof of concept than anything else as the full 3D image is only visible in the center portion of the screen (there is lots of wasted space on the outsides). The relatively low resolution of the Switch’s screen also leads to that familiar yet unpleasant screen door effect.

Still, using the Switch as a VR device is plausible but probably not high on Nintendo’s list of priorities given their previous experience with such technology.
