No Bluetooth radio in Win XP SP3

[MrEd]

Hello-Running Win XP SP3 on Sony desktop PCV-650.

Tried to install a Blue Soleil Bluetooth dongle with provided disc but would not work. Purchased an IO Gear Bluetooth dongle model GBU 421 and downloaded Broadcom bluetooth (Because IO Gears link was antiquated was told) driver but it hangs at validating bluetooth during install. In my device manager, there is no bluetooth radio or bluetooth device. Perhaps this was nuked with Blue Soleil bluetooth software.

Anyway, how can I restore the bluetooth device and install this IO Gear dongle please? Belarc system info below.Thank you!

Can't install Bluetooth driver

Hello-Nothing posted in XP device manager. When I click the executable for the broadcom driver installation it hangs on the second step called verification. When I manually try to install it through device manager the broadcom file is not showing only the folder it is located in. Shouldn't I see something like "Bluetooth Radio" or some bluetooth item in device manager? Since XP sp3 is supposed to have built in bluetooth drivers, I may have nuked them when I installed a different "Blue Soleil" dongle then uninstalled it when it would only work one way from my android phone to pc but not the other way. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Ahhhhh.... Debugging Windows and bluetooth (BTH) drivers brings back such memories!!

Windows started supporting BTH in the very first release of Win XP Service Pack 2 in Oct, 2007!
> But of course the Microsoft BTH driver in that first release of XP SP2 was flaky
> And, by virtue of how Windows searches for and selects drivers, it was IMPOSSIBLE to install most anyone else's BTH driver without actually having to first hack XP! Because it turned out XP would only select and install the MS BTH driver over others! (It was a big blackeye :blackeye: on MS' release of XP SP2 at the time)

They eventually released a patch to fix SP2. (but enough of memory lane! :stickout: )

I'm going to ask the mods move your thread to Device Drivers

In the mean time, start by looking in Add/Remove programs for any 3rd party BTH drivers. If found, uninstall all found from there.

To expand on my instructions

> After any/all BTH entries uninstalled from Add/Remove, try running your BTH installation again without the BTH dongle connected yet

Nothing in device drivers...thanks for your comments though. You say there is a patch for SP2 but what about SP3? Others seem to have it working with this broadcom driver. Any other ideas? Could my blue soleil driver uninstall have deleted the XP driver or wreaked havoc? Thx.

1. "Nothing in device drivers" -Don't know if that was a typo or you misunderstood where i said to look in my last post. Just to double check and clarify: Don't look in Device Manager. Look in Ctl Panel->Add/Remove Programs if any entry for any bluetooth vendor.

2. The problem with the Windows native BTH driver that comes in XP was fixed about 4-6 months into SP2. The fix comes in SP3 (which you are running)

3. So let me ask you this: when you connect the BT dongle do you hear the USB connect ding-dong sound? Can you tell if ANY new devices show up in Device Manager when the dongle is connected? (especially if anything new appears under USB or Other or any Bluetooth category?)

4. I'll take a peek at your Device Manager data. While the BT dongle is inserted see [post=939115]How To Report Your Computer's Device Manager Data[/post]

5. List any Problem Devices

• Click Start->Run, enter: msinfo32. Click the + sign next to Components to expand it
• Click Problem Devices. Anything appear?
• If yes, click on it, Ctrl-A to select all, Ctrl-C to copy it, Ctrl-V to paste into next post
• On the other hand, if no devices are listed, tell me so

Some additional info about Bluetooth and Bluetooth drivers for anyone reading the thread in the future...

The full implementation of Bluetooth supports a collection of different and well-defined bluetooth functions (each "function" is called a "Bluetooth profile").
==> IMPORTANT NOTE:! All Bluetooth devices and all Bluetooth drivers don't necessarily support all Bluetooth profiles.

For example, the Windows Bluetooth driver only supports these BT profiles
>> PAN - Personal area networks
>> SPP - Serial port profile
>> DUN - Dial Up Networking
>> HID - Human Interface Device
>> HCRP - Hard Copy Cable Replacement

The Windows BT driver does NOT support the 2 Bluetooth profiles listed below plus several MORE
>> HFP - Hands Free Profile
>> HSP - Headset Profile

Sometimes one can simply use the native Windows BT drivers. But sometimes one needs to install 3rd party drivers to get the BT profile(s) you bought your BT device for!
