No sound from DVD ROM headphone socket

This may seem a bit of a strange request but I have 2 new players, one a DVD/CD-RW combo and the other a DVD writer and for some reason can get no sound out of the headphone sockets on the front of the players.
Anyone any suggestions?

I have had the same problem. I have never got the headphone jack on my external CD Writer drive to work.
