No sound

Originally, I thought I needed drivers for my sound devices. Now I realize that my problem is actually that I have no sound devices at all. When I go to control panel, multimedia, there are no audio playback devices for me to select from (that menu is grayed out). I'm wondering how I can obtain a device (possibly through downloading) that will serve as a playback device solve my sound problem.

And my OS is Windows 98 by the way.

Does your system have a soundcard or are you using built-in, integrated sound? The easiest way to tell is to look where the speakers plug-in.. if it's in the flat area near where the keyboard/mouse plug-in, or if they plug into one of the long, thin metal slots on the far side of the back of the case.

If it's integrated sound, web search and download CPU-Z and run this. It has an export or register dump on the last About tab which you can zip and attach here. From this, we may be able to determine what drivers you need to download to enable your sound.
