No video files will play after installing bf2

After installing bf2 and a new graphics card(geforce6600) I ran bf2 without any problems. I am running the latest driver(77.72).
After that I tried to play some mpeg1 files on windows media player. But they don't play - my comp stalls, and when I check the windows job list the cpu is maxed out at "99". So I abort the task, and everything is back to normal again.
I tried playing the same files on winamp, and the same thing happens. I tried playing avi and divx files, and none of them work. I've never had problems playing these files, and the problem has started just after installing bf2 and the new video card.
Oddly, I can still play mpeg 1 and avi files on a piece of freeware that I use for vjing - neuromixer pro 0.5. Audio files still play without problems.

    So - any suggestions?
    Thanks

There may be a problem with that driver conflicting with WMP. I've read of similar problems elsewhere.

Try opening WMP, click on Tools, then Options, then Performance, then Advanced and uncheck Use Overlays.

Otherwise, you could try rolling back to an earlier driver version.

you were right - it was a driver problem. Thanks for the tip.
