I have just seen a website which offered payment by credit/debit card or by paypal, but did not see the familiar padlock symbol which indicates that 128 bit SSL encryption is in use. How can this be secure? Even if the site is Pay Pal approved as it says, surely at the point where I enter data & send it it needs to be encrypted ?

The padlock will come on once you get directed to PayPal.
It should also come on once you are on the page where you would enter your creditcard details. If not, go buy somewhere else.
