  1. I am trying to start my laptop (xp home edition) in safe mode but it doesn't ever give me the menu to choose that option. I have tried restarting over and over but no matter how many times i hold down F8 key nothing happens... it starts to go to the black screen.. flickers a cursor for a couple of seconds...looks as if it's attempting to get there.. but then starts up windows as usual. Does anyone have any suggestions or input as to how to do this?

Well, dont hold down the F8 key. Just press it repeatedly. Another option if you still cant, is when you get to windows, go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Select Diagnostic boot up and upon the next restart, it will be in safe mode. Once you get done, do not forget to go back into msconfig and turn it to Normal Startup.
