Notebook wont recognize new hard disk

Hello,

I have an HP Pavillion N3410 Notebook, Amd K6-2 550mhz processor
192mb Ram and IBM Travelstar 5.0gb HDD, and WinMe. This all began
when i installed WinXP in the notebook and then tried to reinstall the original OS. It became a huge hassle so i purchased a Seagate ATA/100 60gb
5400rpm HDD. Now that i have the drive installed, the notebook comes on and
an "Auto Detecting IDE Device" message comes up but then the thing hangs.
Could someone please lead me to a solution? Thank-you for your help.

Oh..i forgot to mention, i have heard that older notebooks(mine is 7 years old)
wont recognize big hard drives. I dont know if it makes a difference but the notebook i heard of having the problem is a Dell, but maybe older HP's do it too). I hope this helps somehow. Thanks again for any help
