i was playing half life 2 and it asked me to update my video drivers. I've played the games hundreds of times before without it asking me but my video card drivers were out of date, so i updated them. Now when ever I try to play half life 2 or counter strike source or any game on stream it loads but then fails and brings me back to my desktop with a message saying "failed to set video mode - resetting to defaults game will now restart with the new settings" and it keeps restarting and giving me that message each time. please help if there a patch to fix this without going back to my old drivers btw the drivers i used to have installed were 6.1.7.7 now I have the 77.72 drivers installed

There have been a number of problems associated with the 77.72 driver. Uninstall and install 71.89 or earlier.

BTW, any patches to HL2 will be automatically downloaded and applied when you log onto Steam and open HL2. So you should have all available patches already.

A good archive of video drivers is Guru3D's Download section...
