Occasional Lockup Problem

Heya,
Got a major problem that i need some help solving. My spec is

AMD Athlon 2400+
Radeon 9600XT 128MB
ASUS A7V8X Mobo
768 DDR

It seems that some 3d games i play such as Halo, the new FEAR single player demo or any other games. The game will lockup with the sound looping for a moment, in some games it might refresh itself after 10-15 seconds and continue as normal.
Sometimes it doesn't, and i have to put my pc into standby mode, after i wake it up....the game runs again. And after awhile...same thing happens again. It gets very frustrating to play some games.

Any ideas on what's goin on?

Sounds like it could be heat related. Have you checked inside your computer for dust build up on you cpu and video card heatsinks? If you need to, get a can of compressed air and gently blow it out.
