my G/f is having a really strange problem I've never seen before in XP. Whenever she opens a folder that contains a thumbnailed avi, she gets the, "explorer has encountered an error" message. It only does this on avi files.

Note, this is a fresh install of XP, after all the updates.

Also, we tried the same XP install disc on my mothers comp, and it did the same thing. Thing is, I'm using that install right now, and it doesn't give me any problems.

It sounds like a DivX/Xvid compatibility issue.

Uninstall both DivX and Xvid from add/remove programs, and then reinstall only the latest XviD codec. Current version is 1.1.0, and Xvid can play DivX encoded files anyway, so there's no need for the other.

Let us know if this fixes the problem :)

If you can live wthout thumbnail views, you can stop Windows trying(and failing) to produce them for video files -

Go to Start/Run/and type regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll click ok.
