This is a wierd one..CD/RW drive replaced with DVD/RW because windows XPH could not 'see' the disk in the drive. Now windows does not 'see' the disk in the new either. Turned off the cache for the drive in the BIOS and it worked. Reboot the system and we are back where we started - CD or DVD in the drive not 'seen'.
Any ideas anyone - although I suspect the best bet is to reinstall the OS. Is this software or hardware?
cheers

Good thinking, but its not that. The drive is visible in device manager and as a drive in windows explorer. The media is not visible. Reboot and it is there. Reboot and it is gone again - just like a cup and ball game.

Are you 100% positive that the drive you replaced the old on with is good? Works in another computer?

To test for software, you put the OS disk in the drive, shut down and restart with the cd/dvd being the first boot device.

If it boots to the disk, then it isn't hardware.

:)

Must be software - probably the driver - as it will boot from the O/S cd.
Another wipe and go session over the weekend, then. So whats new when the sun is shining?
Cheers
