I am having a funny problem with my OE6 (under WinXP-SP2) since day before yesterday. When I load the program, the first page (main information window) comes blank, instead of the usual "OE for ... E-mail ... Newsgroups ...".
I daily update my AV protection (AVG).

I had posted this problem in MS Newsgroup (OE), and have been advised "to turn off e-mail scanning" (ref www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 ). Is this a good advise, and would it solve my issue?

Shall be grateful to learn tips to correct this irritation.

Thanks,

Here are some info about my System :-

PC : Compaq Presario P4, 256 MB RAM
Windows version : XP-SP2
Other AV installed : Nil, but online scans done sometimes, especially trendmicro / kaspersky / a-squared
Other protection software installed : Nothing yet, but sometimes online scans done for malware. Planning to install ewido and kerio version 4
Firewall software installed : Apart from firewall in broadband modem provided by ISP, using windows firewall
Internet connection : Broadband. Also, falling back on dial-up when broadband is down.
Spam filter software installed : No

Turning off email scanning is a good thing.

As mentioned on that page,it causes more trouble than it`s worth.

Make sure Windows is fully updated, and save attachments to disk, then scan them.
Better still, don`t open them at all.

The missing pane is probably caused by active scripting not being on.See HERE

Dear Peddant :

Re-enabled active scripting (as listed in MS KB). Only point I wish to mention here is MS' KB states upto IE5, and I have IE6 (under XP-SP2).

However, post- active scripting, OE threw an error ... saved in file 1 (attached).

I was playing with some of the menu options in OE, just to see any more issue. Mentioning this here, in case it's linked to my "main info window blank" issue.
I clicked font in a message being composed, and OE returned another error ... kindly see the attached file 2.

Help please. Thanks,

You didn`t say whether the active scripting restored the pane.
I`ll assume it didn`t.Those errors seem unconnected to the pane problem,
but if OE is damaged,I suppose they could be.

The first error can be removed by opening IE,and going to
Tools/Internet options/Advanced,and putting a check in
"Disable sript debugging".No-one needs that on anyway.

The second error could be more of a problem. Here are solutions that have worked for different people.
Starting with the easiest -

1.Go into OE/Options/Send,and make sure the mail sending format is HTML.

2.In IE go to Tools/Internet options/Security and set it to "Default".

3.Reinstall OE HERE

4.Reinstall IE HERE

When you`ve got it all working, download FIREFOX or OPERA
and use one of them in place of IE.Just use IE Windows updates,if necessary
