Old Modem

Question: I have had the same modem for seven years, bought from Optimum Online, can it be replaced with something newer and faster and not from Optimum Online?
With the present one from Cablevision I lose connectivity and have to diconnect, wait 3 minutes and then reconnect. That works for a while but then happens again.
OS: Windows XP - 450 Mhz - Pentium 3 [slow]

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

Should be no problem to switch out he modems no matter what kind it is. Just remember that when removing to remove any of the old drivers and stuff like that on the system and then use the new drivers with the new modem and you should have no problems.
