OnePlus, the Chinese handset maker that’s been making waves in the industry over the past couple of years, is finally doing away with its invite-only system… at least, for one of its devices.

In celebration of its second anniversary on December 17, OnePlus is removing the invite requirement for those wishing to purchase the OnePlus 2 starting at midnight on December 5. The company says the OnePlus 2 will be invite-free “forever.”

Eager shoppers can also pick up the OnePlus X invite-free from December 5 through the 7th and enjoy discounts of up to 90 percent on select accessories during the limited ordering period. Curiously enough, you can also score an invite to buy the OnePlus X by purchasing the company’s iPhone 6 / iPhone 6s Sandstone Case which comes with a physical invite (and the chance to win a free device).

Those that order a device or accessory by December 7 will receive it in time for the holidays, we’re told.

The OnePlus invite-only system has been a bit of a double-edged sword for the Chinese smartphone maker. In today’s instant gratification society, if someone has cash in hand, they want to be able to spend it – not have to wait around for a limited window of opportunity to open.

On the flip side, the invite system has enabled OnePlus to scale its operations as it grows. Sometimes the worst thing that can happen to a startup is that it becomes too successful, too quickly. That’s especially true in this instance as OnePlus is unfortunately no stranger to delays.

As of writing, the only OnePlus 2 model in stock is the 64GB storage / 4GB RAM version priced at $389. The OnePlus X, meanwhile, starts at $249.

It's about time they opened it up. Too bad I just bought a Note 5. I'll look into 1+ in two to three years.
