Ooopps... stuffed log on screen

Hi, I have a problem with the XP pro log on/welcome screen, but I do know what went wrong;
I was playing around with XP utilities and I changed the appearance of the welcome screen, then after turning the comp off, then on the next day I get a black screen with the mouse pointer (I’m 100% sure that changing it is the reason), so I’m wondering if there is any way to reset the welcome screen though dos as that’s all I can get up (safe mode and the other boot's get a black screen too) or any other way to get windows running again with out reinstalling and if i do need to reinstall will i lose the data on the hdd?

so your saying that there is no other way?.. like copying the logonui.exe from another XP and putting it in the system32 folder to overwrite the screwed 1 useing DOS?, log in another way or remove the password to by pass the password screen so i can just change it back to what it was?
cos i really dont want to lose all the stuff i have on the comp
