Oot Freeze, Safe Mode Freeze, Startup Disc Freeze

I have an HP nc6220 laptop that is freezing at startup.
I think it may be the HDD but I am really not sure. Any suggestions would help.

Here are the symptoms:

When I turn the computer on I get the "we're sorry, but the system did not boot correctly etc..."

When I choose either "boot windows normally" or "last known good configuration"
I get the Windows boot screen with the windows XP logo and the running blue bar underneath. The computer will just stay hung on that screen for as long as I leave it on.

When I choose any of the safe mode options. It starts searching for files and again just freezes.

When I put in a boot CD and try to repair. It freezes when searching for files

When I put in a boot CD and try to re-install, it tells me there is a problem with the disc.

Once again, any suggestions would be helpful. I purchased a hard drive and a new OS, but if this problem has been solved and I can return those items, I would be super appreciative. Thanks for the help!

It could be Ram as well.

You could try downloading Memtest and testing your Ram with this bootable CD

It is difficult to say which component is fauty, as there's not much to go on.

Start with Memtest, and report back of its findings.
