Optial drives don't read after first use

I have a Dell Dimension, 8400, with both a CD-DVD reader and seperate CD-DVD writer, Windows XP MCE. Both will work fine the first time I use them, but after I use them the first time, they will not read any discs I put in them. When I put a disc in them, the green light comes on for a few seconds and I hear it start to spin, but then the spinning stops and the green light goes out. When I go into My Computer to try to see what is on the disc, it says that there is no disc in the drive. When I try to burn something to it, a message comes up telling me to put a disc in the drive - even though there is one already in there. Has anyone see this happen? Thanks

did you FINALIZE the CD after burning it?

When burning, I do finalize the CD, but this happens even when I use the drive for read only
