Painfully slow Sony Vaio

Okay, that's what I'm doing, assuming slash l means slash and then lower case L.

So I guess it's just not working.

Yes, I'm getting that part right. Sorry, I didn't see your message about I as in "eye." I just tried it with a lower case "I" and it's doing absolutely nothing.

Here is what I'm typing, exactly:

tasklist | findstr /I "vaio" >myVaio.log

There are spaces after tasklist, after |, after findstr, after lower case I, and after "vaio." There are no other spaces.

Hmm; Don't understand. Move on to Using the EVENTVWR.MSC to determine what failed & why

Okay, I ran Event Viewer and between 8/31 and 9/3, there were countless errors, as well as a few critical errors and warnings.

It's all got a bit too technical for me. :) The Vaio isn't that old and is running Windows 7 so it's worth persevering. Besides it's eligible for the free upgrade to Windows 10. If we can get it into reasonable shape, with the assistance of jobeard, I suggest that we make the upgrade to W10 the target. Clearly we don't want the upgrade to go wrong before it completes so the laptop needs sorting out first. Later, when hopefully it is running Windows 10 without issues, an upgrade to an SSD hard drive will boost its performance considerably.

Have you found any other Sony software to uninstall? Remember that you do need the Sony Vaio control panel if that is on your Vaio.

I only uninstalled Vaio Gate. It's hard to know what others can be safely uninstalled. Vaio Messenger pops up fairly often but never actually gives me messages that I can read. But I'm reluctant to uinstall it.

My son boujght a new computer. He was going to give his perfectly good older laptop to his dad, whose old computer is not great. But yesterday, his dad said I could have it and he'll take this one and I think he's going to strip the hard drive.

I would still like to know if there are any concerns with those critical errors and warnings. He thinks he'll be able to use it with no problem, but I'm not so sure. And I want to be sure I have all my files.

You'll come out of this a loser unless the computer you receive is running Windows 7 or later. Windows 10 is excellent and your Vaio is eligible for the free upgrade. I'm very happy with my Vaio which is older than yours and now running Windows 10. As your Vaio's hard drive is going to be disposed of or wiped you might as well go for the W10 upgrade and see what happens. If I understand you correctly if it all goes wrong that no longer matters. The Microsoft media creation tool will download and handle everything for you including activating Windows 10. You don't need to save it onto a usb stick. The process requires a good internet connection and takes a few hours. Best of luck.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install

Oh no, it does matter if it all goes wrong. Or at least I think it does. Because my ex-husband will need this computer if I take our son's computer.

I'd like to address the problems before I give this away. And I'd like to address those problems before I upgrade to a different operating system.

I really want to understand why those critical errors and warnings appeared, so I'm hoping JOBeard can shed some light on that before I move forward.

The situation has got very clouded now and I don't know where we are supposed to be going with this. Too many cooks spoil the broth as they say. :)

Yeah, I think it's best to wait for JOBeard to reply regarding those logs I posted before I do anything else. And if he/she thinks that letting my ex strip the hard drive and use my laptop is the answer, then I'll do that.

The competence of your ex in repairing a laptop is an unknown but unless he is used to such jobs I wouldn't be confident. You have to make decisions such as who has which laptop for yourself. My last suggestion is that if Windows Update is working OK and you are running Internet Explorer 11 go for the Windows 10 upgrade. There are no certainties that we can give you but our advice is free. Keep us updated with what happens to the Vaio.

Thanks. I'll ask my ex when he gets back, as he will be taking this computer, and I'll be taking my son's old computer. So I'll ask him if he's ok with me upgrading to Windows 10. For all I know, he might prefer Windows 7. Thanks.

QUITE AGREE - - but I've got family issues that came up and I can't deal with it just now - - more on Tuesday, unless you get impatient :sigh:

I'm not impatient. Although this computer has certainly tried my patience.

By Tuesday, my ex will be back (he's away this weekend) and I'll have a chance to discuss this with him.

I am concerned about all the warnings and critical issues and I do wish I understood the code and knew how serious the situation was.

Probably the most important thing to understand (when you're available) is whether or not these issues will be resolved if my ex simply wipes out the hard drive when he starts using this computer.

That is exactly what we were trying to avoid! Reinstalling Windows is hardly ever quick and easy. For example there can be difficulties finding the correct drivers. If we had had the time to get the Vaio running Windows 7 better we could have upgraded to Windows 10 and hopefully all would be running like new.

It is possible that there are some hardware issues so there's no guarantees with this. At least you are not running up a bill at a computer repair shop. I advise that you take things slowly but it's up to you. Don't swap it for a computer running XP or Vista however nicely they run. Those OSs can't be readily upgraded to Windows 10 and they will not be secure enough for daily use.
