You may remember initial plans Microsoft had for its Passport service for a sort of unified 'online identification system' ... years later, much of that has been discarded and the service is primarily being used in Microsoft own websites while Longhorn (next generation OS) will probably adopt some of those initial ideas touted for Passport at first instance.
