PC only works in safe mode

If system will not accept windows install using just the Intel graphics, it would seem something is wrong with motherboard. Based on that, I would explore motherboard replacement.

Removing dedicated gpu* Sorry, should have stated that better. Problem still exists sadly, sent the motherboard to gigabyte RmA, but it came back saying "No problem found under various configurations". Put it all back and still a freeze. All I know is that it is a graphics driver problem, as soon as it goes from windows basic system monitor driver to intel hd 4600 driver (I can literally see switch via device manager) I have 3 seconds before it all freezes. Disabling the intel hd 4600 driver will cause the pc to work like normal, but if I plug my dedicated graphics the problem will still re-occur all over again. Even my local pc repair shop failed to fix it. It's driving me crazy, how does a simple driver by it self cause all of this. Fml.

You must ensure that either the onboard chip OR the GPU card is active, but never BOTH at the same time. Usually, we disable to onboard via the BIOS.

Would that still apply if I have the dedicated gpu removed? So its only using integrated right now. Haven't tried disabling the onboard via bios, as last time is did that the pc made a loud screeching sound.

IMO, you are going down the wrong path asserting it's the cpu. If it runs in Safe Mode, then it is NOT the cpu.

It's a very expensive and powerful graphics card.

Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:

  • GeForce GTX 1080 - On your average system we recommend a 550 Watts power supply unit.
I've just realised that this problem goes back four months. For the money it cost I'd have returned the graphics card for a refund.

Ok so I was able to disable on board in bios with no problem this time around, and only use dedicated but the problem still persists. Would you recommend buying a new PSU its rather expensive at 233 though :(

It's not the graphics card, I was able to test it yesterday with another PC and it worked flawlessly. And it couldn't be, as the PC also freezes with integrated (intel hd 4600).

It runs in safe mode perfectly with just integrated (enabled), but I believe that's only because its very limited in safe mode. And it does in fact freeze in safe mode when the dedicated is on.

Your graphics card purchase merits inclusion in the section: "What piece of hardware do you regret buying?" You've kept it so long now that your not going to be able to return it. How about buying another computer to put it in?

There you are then. Decision time. Which do you value the most, the graphics card that's giving you a hard time or the computer that doesn't work properly with it?

To be perfectly blunt and get back to the real problem at hand here.
The ISO thats on the usb drive and usb drive itself, could you locate that iso on your computer please ?
Then I want you to find or buy a new usb flash drive at 8gb.
Sandisk and kingston flash drives do justice when it comes to os installs, a local pharmacy should carry them.
I am trying to rule out directly if its the iso you downloaded is jacked up or your flash drive isn't working out right.
If you have a dvd burner that could be the better way to go at it and see what happens.
The longer it takes for any media device to read and write to your hdd/ssd during installation.
It'll fall back directly on it, now if it does not do that, you still get a error early in the installation part.
Its either the hard drive or the mobo having problems.
Most of the time its the hdd/ssd acting up, hdd tools from WD and seagate.
Will see directly if something isn't right or if its on its way to die or dead already.

I've used various drives, and rma'd the motherboard. We've narrowed it down to either the PSU or CPU

I really just have one option to buy a new psu or new cpu I can only buy one. So I cant do process of elimination, do you think its the psu or cpu?

I wont lie to you but I don't take a wild guess and having something completely wrong here.
I'll give you a choice go to a local computer store and ask them if you can borrow a psu.
Have them directly test out your system in front of you with another psu.
If and only "if it fails" in front of both of you, use the number I provided and speak with intel.
Since you have a 4790k I think your warrenty, might be up but intel technicians will tell you that.

If you refuse to do that and not listen to me, you will be on your own to figure it out.
Looking at your problem I would assume its the cpu directly thats at fault.
I think something might be wrong with fsb where the cpu tells the mobo where the data goes and how to set it up and break it back down.

Let me know what you will do from now until next monday and whats going on.
Good luck.
